Bangkok Art and Design Part II

Today I want to write about a special place which is probably a unique concept around South East Asia.
I discovered it recently and was even seriously thinking about becoming part of it, but hey Barcelona is still
waiting for me! I am talking about the V64 Art Studio in Bangkok.

Today I want to write about a special place which is probably a unique concept around South East Asia.
I discovered it recently and was even seriously thinking about becoming part of it, but hey Barcelona is still
waiting for me! I am talking about the V64 Art Studio in Bangkok.

It is a huge area, about 4800 m2, where at least 50 artists work and, some of them, even live together.
The complex is divided into 37 studios, a gallery, the V64 Art Academy and a music school with additional
workshop space, accommodations for guest artists, Thai and International, as well as a souvenir shop,
a coffee shop with a bar and a garden.

Attasit Pokpong, the director of the V64 and higly prized contemporary artist in Thailand founded the
art studio 2 years ago. "I just wanted to combine what I like the most: doing arts among friends and like-
minded people." he says. So Attasit decided to rent a huge space 30 min away from Bangkok´s city centre.
Having put a lot of effort, the first members of the V64 build up the studios and the gallery by themselves
where nowadays numerous artist can work and exhibit their fantastic paintings and sculptures.

But what would be next? An artist, some people won´t believe it, has also bills to pay. This is where the
interesting part starts which clearly demonstrates that the V64 is a professional community taking care of
their artists. The studio offers their network connections to the residents and makes them participate in
exhibition programs and shows. In this way the artists get a chance to sell their work to foreign clients from all
over the world as well as doing exhibitions abroad. This service and much more is included in the rent and the
low commission an artist pays when a painting or sculpture is sold.

Also highly appreciated is the V64 Art Academy and the music school where the studio supports the artistic scene
in the education sector while members of the V64 give workshops to school classes and whoever is interested to
join their proposed activities during the weekend.

The ambiance, to put it in a nutshell, is INSPIRING. Contemporary art in every form from paintings, drawings
to sculptures and experimental media. I really enjoyed being around the studio, especially the warmhearted
and very welcoming residents.
