Bangkok Art and Design Part III - TCDC (Thailand Creative & Design Centre)

As this is going to be my last post on Bangkok Art and Design, at least for the moment, I have chosen to write
about the TCDC - Thailand Creative & Design Centre. For those who come to Bangkok for the first time the
sightseeing schedule might be packed with numerous temples and (food)markets, but this is definitely a place
not to be missed if you are interested in design and books.

The TCDC is situated on the top floor of The Emporium Shopping Centre (BTS Phrom Pong). Also if you are a
big food lover then you will probably stop first at the gourmet sector with its undeniable cakes and culinaries
on the fifth floor before you continue your way upstairs. So what's the TCDC? It is Asia's first design learning
centre established by the government providing a big resource on different creative topics. The idea is to boost
the country's creativity and inspire innovative ideas among professionals.

Once you get through the entrance, you will find a huge exhibition hall and a shop on your left hand side
as well as the biggest design library in South East Asia with a restaurant on the right hand side. Next to the
reception area there are numerous boxes where you can leave a bunch of your business cards displayed
if you are an entrepreneur or freelancer.

The exhibition hall hosts a permanent exhibition about basic design knowledge from all over the world in
cooperation with leading design centers as well as free creative space for design newcomers. On the opposite
side of the 4,500 m2 area you can find the huge library with more than 25,000 design books and a large selection
of multimedia work.

The atmosphere is that of a normal library, so keep respecting the rules. And then enjoy the books! The selection
of design topics will make you feel happy and sad at the same time because you know that you will never ever be
able to read all that. It is a great place to bring your laptop and do some work, there are even little "offices" provided
where you can retire. The TCDC is open to anyone and you can join and use their facilities for a small fee (200 THB
= 5€ for 10 days as a non-member). In addition you can also attend seminars, lectures and workshops.
